Florence and metropolitan area: events in January 2022

Here is a rundown of events scheduled for January 2022 in Florence and the surrounding area. The announcements are taken from Feel Florence, the official tourism site of the Municipality of Florence and the metropolitan city area

All events may be subject to restrictions, cancellation or variation due to the ongoing health crisis.
Dante 700 – Some of the events celebrating the 700th anniversary of the death of the Supreme Poet continue; the exhibition “Dante Alighieri, gli Uomini illustri e il Bene comune” has been extended until 16 January 2022. See the exhibition in the Sala dei Gigli in Palazzo Vecchio. In collaboration with the Uffizi Gallery, The Museo Galileo is holding an exhibition dedicated to Dante and his knowledge in the field of science.
The Basilica of Santa Croce is host to an innovative cultural project, conceived by the artist Felice Limosani, until 13 February.

Exhibitions – Two important exhibitions are being held at the Palazzo Medici Riccardi Museum: “Il Fiorentino. Il Gran Diamante di Toscana” an exhibition celebrating the rare and beautiful Medici diamond, known as “Il Fiorentino” is on until 26 January and through to March, visitors can enjoy the Benozzo Gozzoli exhibition dedicated to the creation of the Magi Chapel. Until 16 January the “Cattedrale dell’Immagine” in Florence is hosting “Inside Dalì”, a fascinating multimedia art exhibition based on the life of the Catalan artist. The Museo degli Innocenti [the 15th century orphanage-turned-museum] is celebrating those legendary little bricks with the show I love Lego, on until 31 January.
Palazzo Strozzi is currently hosting Shine, an exhibition of some of the most famous works by the great contemporary artist Jeff Koons. Moving from Florence to other parts of the metropolitan area, the Palazzo Pretorio of Figline Valdarno is hosting an exhibition dedicated to 40 years of local restorations; open until 20 February. A multimedia exhibition about Leonardo’s studies in architecture is on show in the Sala del Podestà of the Conti Guidi Castle in Vinci until 27 February.
In Vicchio, take a dive into the prehistoric, where the large park next to the municipal swimming pool has been transformed into a “Jurassic Park”, populated with dinosaurs and other prehistoric animals. Display on until 28 February.
Theatre – The theatre season is in full swing in the Florence area with a calendar packed with events in theatres all over, from the Teatrodante Carlo Monni in Campi Bisenzio, to the Teatro delle Arti in Lastra a Signa and the Teatro del Popolo in Castelfiorentino. Shows also programmed at the Aurora Theatre in Scandicci, the Giotto Theatre in Borgo San Lorenzo, the Manzoni Theatre in Calenzano and the Garibaldi Theatre in Figline.
Sport & walking – The biggest ice rink in Europe, at the Fortezza da Basso in Florence remains open until 16 January.
